Does WhatsApp work in China?

Short answer: no — WhatsApp is blocked by the Great Firewall. But you can still use it on your trip with a travel eSIM or a VPN, as long as you set it up before you fly. Here's exactly how.

WhatsApp does not work on a normal connection in China. Messages, voice and video calls are all blocked by the Great Firewall on any Chinese SIM or Wi-Fi — and it makes no difference where you downloaded the app. It has been blocked since 2017, along with the rest of Meta's services.

The good news: getting WhatsApp working is easy if you prepare before departure. You just need to route your data outside mainland China.

The easiest fix: a travel eSIM

A travel eSIM routes your data through a foreign carrier outside the Great Firewall, so WhatsApp — and Google, Instagram and maps — works the moment you land, with no VPN tunnel to maintain. Install it before you fly and switch it on when you arrive.

The alternative: a VPN

A VPN also unblocks WhatsApp by tunnelling your connection outside China — useful on a longer trip or if you're using a local SIM. The catch: you must install and test it before you fly, because VPN sites and apps are blocked once you land. See our Internet & VPN guide for the VPNs that currently work in China.

Don't get caught out

You cannot download a VPN or eSIM app once you're in China — the stores and provider sites are blocked. Set up your chosen method before departure and send yourself a test message to confirm it works.

If your contacts in China use messaging, they'll be on WeChat — worth installing before you go. For staying in touch with people back home, WhatsApp over an eSIM or VPN is the reliable route. See the full picture in our Internet & VPN guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp work in China?

No. WhatsApp — messages, voice and video calls — is blocked by the Great Firewall on any Chinese SIM or Wi-Fi, regardless of where you installed the app. It only works if your data is routed outside China, which a travel eSIM or a pre-installed VPN does.

How can I use WhatsApp in China?

Two ways, both set up before you fly. The simplest is a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China — WhatsApp then works normally with no extra steps. The alternative is a VPN installed and tested before arrival. We recommend bringing both: the eSIM as your primary, the VPN as backup.

Why is WhatsApp blocked in China?

WhatsApp is owned by Meta and uses end-to-end encryption that China’s authorities cannot monitor, so it has been blocked by the Great Firewall since 2017 — alongside Facebook, Instagram and other Meta services. Chinese residents use WeChat instead, which is the dominant messaging app in the country.

Can I download a VPN for WhatsApp after arriving in China?

No — VPN provider websites and most VPN apps are blocked once you land, and the Google Play Store is blocked entirely. You must install and test your VPN before you fly. This is the single most common mistake travellers make.

What messaging apps work in China without a VPN?

WeChat works perfectly and is the local standard — worth installing before you go. Apple iMessage works between Apple devices. SMS text messages work on any SIM. WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and Facebook Messenger are all blocked and need an eSIM or VPN.
