Golden Week punishes optionality. The more a route depends on deciding tomorrow’s city tomorrow, the more fragile it becomes. A good peak-week itinerary converts that uncertainty into a fixed transport spine and keeps flexibility inside each city.
Seven statutory days off under the 2026 State Council arrangement.
Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October are normal working days.
A planning buffer for outbound and return traffic—not extra official holiday dates.
Book in this order
City-to-city transport
Fix only the legs that change your overnight base. Confirm the full station name and leave recovery time after long-haul arrival.
Hotels near useful lines
Choose a base with multiple metro or walking options. Saving one transfer each day matters when stations and roads are busy.
Capacity-controlled sights
Reserve must-see attractions through their current official channel. Passport requirements and holiday release rules can differ.
Optional tours and restaurants
Add them after the transport spine. Keep at least one day that can change without losing a non-refundable booking.
China Railway controls the live release schedule and inventory. Use the passport train-booking guide, then act when sales open for your exact date. A pre-order is a booking request, not proof that a seat has been issued.
The best route strategy
Stay in one city for at least three nights and make local choices from that base. If you must use two cities, connect them once and avoid a same-day attraction reservation immediately after the train.
| Trip type | Golden Week version | What to remove |
|---|---|---|
| First China trip | Beijing or Shanghai as one deep base | The third and fourth city |
| Two-city trip | One confirmed rail/flight leg, 3+ nights each | Same-day side trips after transfer |
| Scenery trip | Stay inside or beside the destination | Long daily gateway commutes |
| Food trip | Several saved options per neighbourhood | Cross-city travel for one viral restaurant |
Already booked? Use the rescue plan
Your train is sold out
Search the correct city’s other stations, adjacent departure times and a slower direct service before adding a risky transfer. If the city is optional, keep the current base.
The attraction is full
Do not buy unofficial identity-linked inventory. Substitute a district-scale route, another museum with live capacity, or an outdoor day.
Your hotel is far away
Map the first and last mile now. Save the Chinese address, nearest metro exit and licensed taxi/ride-hailing fallback.
Weather breaks the day
Move a flexible indoor cluster forward. Do not let a weather-sensitive excursion sit on the same day as an intercity move.
Will things be open?
Major transport, hotels, many malls and many attractions typically operate, but holiday hours, reservations and crowd controls are venue-specific. Banks and government offices generally close. Small-business hours vary. Use the category-by-category opening guide and verify each must-have directly.
Frequently asked questions
When is China Golden Week in 2026?
The official National Day holiday runs from 1 to 7 October 2026. Sunday 20 September and Saturday 10 October are designated working days. CathayGuide treats 30 September to 8 October as a wider travel-pressure window for planning; those shoulder dates are not extra statutory holidays.
Is China too crowded during Golden Week?
Headline attractions and popular intercity corridors can be extremely busy, but a trip is still workable if it uses one base, reserved transport, timed-entry bookings and less famous neighbourhood alternatives. It is a poor period for an improvised multi-city route.
How early should I book Golden Week trains?
Book as soon as the official sales window opens for your exact travel date. The window and inventory are controlled by China Railway, so verify live availability on 12306 or your booking platform rather than relying on a fixed countdown copied months earlier.
