Choose your transport by arrival time
Best for visitors arriving before the final service, with manageable luggage and a hotel near a useful station.
Best after public transport closes, in rain, with jet lag, or when the metro requires awkward changes.
Worth considering for a very late first arrival, large groups or travellers who want a fixed pickup plan.

XIY: terminal, hotel and sightseeing are three different decisions
Terminal 5 opened in February 2025 and connects to the airport’s integrated transport hub over two levels. Check the terminal on your flight before travelling and follow the current signs after collecting bags; an older airport video or hotel instruction may describe a different terminal layout.
Choose the airport-to-hotel route separately from a Terracotta Army plan. A hotel near the Bell Tower or City Wall calls for an actual city transfer first. A private car can make sense only when a confirmed itinerary intentionally goes to an out-of-city attraction, with a realistic allowance for immigration, baggage and traffic—not because it sounds like an efficient shortcut.
XIY is increasingly busy with international arrivals. Treat the first hour after landing as variable: complete border formalities, collect baggage, then decide whether the live rail or bus window still suits the hotel. If it does not, use the official taxi rank, DiDi or a pre-arranged car.
Official arrival updates for XIY
Check the terminal first
Xi’an Xianyang’s T5 opened in February 2025. It connects to the integrated transport hub across two levels and has a different layout from earlier terminals, so use the terminal shown on your booking and follow current airport signage.

Official 2026 border data reported 577,000 international visitors passing through Xi’an Port in 2025 and a larger entry-and-exit inspection waiting area at T5. Build some flexibility into immigration, baggage collection and the ground transfer rather than relying on a tight last-train plan.

The airport is outside the historic core. Save your hotel address in Chinese, decide whether your arrival time supports rail, and keep a licensed taxi, DiDi or pre-booked transfer fallback before you leave home.
